Explanation of Tribal Positions and Roles

The word Massasoit is a bloodline title equal to a king, it transcends generations. It is not an elected position and its authority supercedes all other titles, such as  sachem, sagamore, great or grand anything other than Great Leader, which means the leader of leaders. To refer to the Massasoit as a chief, sagamore, sachem, or a grand or great anything is to belittle the title and its authoritative place.

In a world so rapidily changing, it is impossible for any person or persons to go back to the boundries of their ancestors.  Therefore, the title of Massasoit is forever retired.  Henceforth, the title Massasoit (King, The Great Leader) rests with our Creator, the Almighty.  To wear or display three eagle feathers, or more, with red tips would be deemed unfitting.

The Ancient Lodge of Sachems are subject to all Council of Seven rulings.  Their titles, with their appropriate pronounciations in parenthesis, and honoring headdress are as follows:

Sagamore (sag - eh - mor) : Two eagle feathers with red tips.

Sachem (say - chem) : One eagle feather with a red tip.

Powwas (pow - woss) : Two deer spikes with a male and female center.  One red and one yellow feather below each spike.

Clan Grandmother : One red and one green feather on each side.

War Chief : Four white feathers, with a red bar across the center of each feather.

Pineese Warrior (pie - nee - see) : One red, one yellow, one white, and one dark brown feather.  One rattlesnake skin centered and four copperhead skins hanging down.  The Society of Pineese Warriors is the spiritual guardian of the Pokanoket Wampanoag tribe.

Clan Mother : One white, one yellow, one red, and one blue feather.
