The Three Sisters

Ages ago, three maidens came to Potumtuck, for they knew the People of Pokanoket were very good people.  The Pokanoket were know as "A People of Prayer" for we gave thanks to the Creator always, for this was our way of life, we prayed to the Great Spirit.  And so the Three Maidens came - as Three Messengers - with gifts for the People of the Great Spirit.

One Maiden brought corn, one brought squash, and one brought beans.  They gave them to our People and told them that these were gifts from the Creator and that the Creator wanted us to plant these gifts.  That they would produce more and more gifts from their seeds: and, that we were to harvest these gifts and eat them and share them - and yes, they were good.

But there were some that did not believe that these maidens were messengers from the Creator, so they said, "Please, please, please, give us a sign that you are from the 'Creator'."  And so, the Three Maidens walked to the waters edge... then they walked into the water... turned to the people, waved, and turned to stone!

Those three large rocks that are on the shore at Potumtuck still today are a perpetual reminder to our People, the People of Pokanoket, of the awesome power of our Creator, the Great Spirit - God Almighty.
