The Three Mountains of the Past, Present, and Future

Within our ancient kingdom we have the three mountains, with the first being known as Mount Hope (Mount Montaup), located in Bristol, Rhode Island, and is referred to as the Mountain of our Past.  The second is Mount Wachusetts, located near Princeton, Massachusetts, and is referred to as the Mountain of the Present.  The third is Mount Monadnock, located near Jaffery, New Hamshire, and is referred to as the Mountain of the Future.

In the early days, fires were lit on the tops of the mountains and were a source of communications. You can see the tops of the mountains from one to the other, from  Mount Hope to Mount Wachusetts to Mount Manadnock.

Mount Hope is a small mountain in present day Bristol, Rhode Island overlooking Mount Hope Bay (referred to as Pokanoket Bay prior to the King Philip's War).  Mount Hope was the side of the Pokanoket village of Sowams and is remembered for its role in the King Philip's War.  During the war, Massassoit Metacom made nearby Mount Hope his base of operations.  The "Seat of Massasoit Metacom" is a rocky ledge at the base of the mountain and resembles a natural made throne.  Mount Hope was used as a lookout site for enemy ships on Mount Hope Bay amd where Massasoit Metacom held meetings.

The site of where colonist militia Captain Benjamin Church's men killed King Philip is located at the nearby swamp and Church eventually became an owner of Mount Hope.  After the war concluded, the town of Bristol was settled in 1680 as part of the Plymouth Colony.  Mount Hope remained a part of Massachusetts until the English Crown transferred Bristol to the Rhode Island Colony in 1747.

During the Cold War, the U.S. Army Core of Engineers shaved upwards of over seventy-five feet off the top of Mount Hope in order to build a radar site for the Nike missile system. Shortly after the tower was built, the U.S. Army Core of Engineers relocated the site across Mount Hope (Pokanoket) Bay to the Fall River, Massachusetts area. Mount Hope Bay is a small beautiful bay that connects Bristol County RI , and the northern portion of Aquidneck Island - RI with Bristol County Mass- Bristol, RI to Fall River, Mass.

Today, Brown University's Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology owns 376 acres of woodland on Mount Hope, off of Tower Street in Bristol.  Mount Hope Farms is also located nearby the location.
