Pokanoket Wampanoag Summer Powwow - August 2009

The Summer Powwow for 2009 was a huge success and a lot of fun was had by all of those who attended the event.  As Powwows go, this event wasn't like the more commercial type and was more of an old traditional Powwow where people are there for the friendly social interaction, the cultural learning, the dancing, and of course the delicious food afterward for the tribal members, dancers, drummers, and vendors.  We even had the opportunity to perform a ceremony to wake up our tribal drum, which was very exciting.  The traditional old style Powwow is the best format to present and share our culture with the youth, so they can embrace their heritage, and for the general public, so they may be educated about the Native American people.

In the opening pictures of the first photo album, you will see four men walking out to the center of the circle.  Those men are, from left to right after they line up, are Clifford "Firelight" Soucy, Professor John Cech, Clifford "Lionheart" Guy, and Jeffrey "Silver Star of Pokanoket" Weeden.  Professor Cech, from the University of Florida, graciously attended our Powwow and gave a speech about one of our past leaders, Squaw Sachem Princess Redwing.  After Professor Cech's talk, he was presented with a ceremonial peace pipe and Lionheart also presented Professor Cech with the Native name of "Many Arrows" for his passion and devotion expressed for Princess Redwing and the Native American people.
